This is our Luxury pet-friendly Indoor plant for January 2020. Here are some tips for how to best care for this unusual orchid.
Native to the forest floors of Southeast Asia.
Light and position in the home
In the wild, the Jewel orchid is found growing on the floor shaded by the forest canopy above. As a result, this plant prefers a shadier spot. Avoid direct light as this can easily burn the foliage. Try a north or east-facing window.
Flowers and foliage
Most orchids are grown for their remarkable flowers and although the Jewel orchid does produce clusters of tiny pale flowers it is its foliage that catches the attention. The maroon, velvety leaves with bright pinstripe veins that sparkle in the light are to be admired all year round.
Watering and humidity
Try to keep your Jewel orchid evenly moist. Like most plants it will not tolerate its roots being sat in water for too long. This plant prefers higher humidity, place on a tray of watered pebbles or maybe in a bathroom.
Room temperatures are ideal, avoid large temperature fluctuations and anything lower than 10 degrees Celsius.
Did you know?
If you are passionate about the foliage of the Jewel orchid rather than the flowers, you can pinch out the flowering spikes when they start to form. This encourages the plant to remain compact and bushy and in turn, produces more leaves.
