How do I care for my Peperomia?

Peperomia Caperata aka Radiator plant

Peperomia Caperata a.k.a. Radiator plant is our Luxury pet-friendly plant of the month for July 2019. Here are some care tips so you can be sure to your Peperomia will thrive once it arrives in your home!

Native habitat
Tropical rainforest floors of Brazil.

Light and position in the home
Peperomia loves bright but indirect light. Think of the shadowy area on the rainforest floor: that's where it's originally from. Try to pick a location that mimics those conditions as far as possible. This plant can tolerate shade, but not complete shade. It appreciates high humidty, so the bathroom or kitchen would be a good place.

Flowers and foliage
White flowers that look like spikes may appear during summer and autumn, but they are not the main attraction. Peperomia is grown for its handsome green ridged leaves, which grow from the centre of the plant and may appear lighter red or pink when they first start to sprout.

This plant has succulent-like leaves which are able to store some water, so it can be easy to overwater it. Water it only when the soil is just turning dry - but don't wait until the soil is completely dry either, as it enjoys high humidity. If you can stand it on a saucer of pebbles surrounded with water to ensure high humidity at all times, your plant will thank you for it.

Peperomia likes hot temperatures, just like the jungles of Brazil. Do not expose it to anything below 15 degrees Celcius.

Did you know? Peperomia is a great houseplant for beginners because it is super undemanding. It's often used in terrariums. It is non-toxic to dogs and cats.

Why I chose this plant
Peperomia is one of the most popular plants on Instagram right now. It's seen quite a revival in the last 2-3 years, so we knew it would have to be on our pet-friendly list at some point. However, watering with this plant can sometimes be a challenge. Maintaining moderately moist soil all the time is not super easy, because we are all BUSY living life and sometimes things slip off the radar. The best thing you can do for this plant is make sure it is in a location where you see it often, and where you can quickly and easily give it a bit of water without too much effort. It will require more watering than some of the other plants we've sent to you, so it's one to keep an eye on. The unusual hockey-stick-shaped flowers should be more than enough of a reward for your efforts though.
