Tillandsia 'Curly Slim' is our indoor Plant of the Month for January 2022. This means that all our Indoor plant subscription customers who are scheduled a delivery this month will receive this plant.
Native habitat
This is a hybrid of T. intermedia - native to Mexico and T. streptophylla - native to Central America.
Light and position in the home
Your airplant will enjoy bright, but indirect light and dappled shade. Direct sun can burn their leaves.
Watering
Spray your potted airplant, or bathe if unpotted, 1-2 times per week in the summer. If bathing, place in a bowl/sink of tepid water for 15-30 mins and shake off excess. Tillandsias absorb water through their leaves rather than their roots, therefore it isn't necessary to water the potting mix. Keep slightly under-hydrated to accentuate the curls. Reduce watering in winter.
Temperature
Tillandsia do best in warm environments, between 12-27C. They also require good air circulation and some humidity too.
Foliage and flowers
These funky airplants produce a long flower spike and a little purple flower. However, these plants are monocarpic, which means the plant dies off after flowering. But fear not. Before doing so, they produce little 'pups' which can be removed from the mother plant and grown as new plants. Alternatively, you can snip off the flowering stalk as it emerges and your airplant will keep on growing.
Did you know?
Tillandsia are epiphytes, which means they grow on other plants (i.e. trees) instead of growing in soil in the ground. They absorb water and nutrients from the surrounding atmosphere, through their leaves and not through their roots.
Tillandsia are part of the Bromeliaceae family, the same family as the Pineapple!
Is this plant toxic to cats and dogs?
No, this plant isn't toxic to cats and dogs.
Why we chose this plant
Everyone needs at least one airplant in their collection! Hence why we decided to treat all of our indoor subscribers to this Tillandsia this month. What we love most about airplants is their intriguing, otherworldly looks (almost like the tentacles of an exotic sea creature), their robustness (they're pretty drought tolerant), and how easy they are to look after.
We fell in love with the quirky 'Curly Slim' because of his super curly leaves which are really unique and fun. And it is one of, if not the most, sought after hybrid airplant available! We really hope you love this one as much as we do! Please remember to share any images on our social media channels. We would love to see your cool and creative ways of growing your new airplant.
