ERYNGIUM Blue Hobbit Perennial Plant
Better known as ‘sea holly ’, the Eryngium is a tall plant with spiny leaves and thistle-like flowers that bring a textured and wild look to your garden. The tall flowering stems emerge from a small bush of beautiful herbaceous and marked foliage and are topped with a small, bulbous cluster of tiny, pointed blue toned flowers that sit on a spiked crown. These plants look especially striking in a gravel garden or mixed into a herbaceous border where they will attract plenty of pollinating insects.
Where to plant Eryngium plants
Your Eryngium will thrive in well-draining soil that receives full sun throughout the day. Make sure that the location is also sheltered from strong, cold winds.
How to look after Eryngium plants
Water well to keep the soil moist but not wet. Adding fertilizer to this plant is optional, as you may damage the roots. Deadhead regularly to keep the plant looking neat and to encourage new growth. You should remove the flowers when they start to go brown since this is when they are most likely to drop their seed pods. If left, you may end up with new plants in the following year that end us congesting the soil. In late autumn or early winter, apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to protect it from winter frosts.
