This potato has excellent versatility in the kitchen with pleasant red skin and creamy white flesh. When cooked this potato becomes fluffy, ideal for roasting and mashing.
Maincrop potatoes produce larger potatoes than first or second earlies and grow in the ground rather than in grow bags or containers. They take around 16-22 weeks to mature and are ready to harvest in August to October. They have a milder taste and a fluffier texture making them ideal for roasting or mashing.
Potatoes are one of the easiest vegetables to grow at home and one seed potato can produce a large harvest (around 10 kg per 3m row). In a sunny space with well-draining soil, dig straight trenches about 12cm (4") deep 60cm (23") apart. Place your seed potatoes in the trench with 30cm (11") space between each then cover with the soil from the trench. Water well to help the potatoes establish and then regularly to keep the soil moist. Soon they produce green shoots, when the shoots are about 20cm (7") tall, use a rake, hoe or spade to pile soil around the shoots about halfway.
Around August and October, Once the plants leaves have turned yellow and have begun to die down, your maincrop potatoes will be ready to harvest. Make sure you harvest on a dry day, cut the potato plant to ground level then gently lift the plants out with a fork. Discard any plants that have discoloured or been attacked by pests. Leave to dry in the sun on a blanket then store in a cool, frost free place where they will keep for four to six months.
