The most common onion you will find in the supermarket, the Sturon produces large, round straw-coloured bulbs. The large yields from this plant make it ideal for avid home cooks and their mild taste will go well with any dish. These are reliable and consistent vegetables that are ideal for the amateur or expert.

Onions need a sunny, sheltered site with fertile, well-drained soil. Before planting improve the soil by digging in some compost or well-rotted manure. From mid-March to mid-April or in September plant your onion sets 5-10 cm (2-4") apart in rows that are spaces 25-30cm (10-12") from each other. or in September. Gently push the sets into the prepared soil with the tip just showing, firm the soil around them and water well. Keep watering regularly to keep the soil moist, but beyond that and some basic weeding they can be left to themselves.

Onions are ready to harvest once the foliage starts to turn yellow and topple over. For spring-planted onions this will be from late summer to early autumn, and for September-planted, from July. Before the foliage dies completely, lift the onion from the ground and place in a well-ventilated space for about two weeks to ripen. Once ripe, store the bulbs in a dry space until needed.
