Also known as the African lily, the Agapanthus is a summer flowering perennial plant popular in beds, borders, containers or cottage gardens. They are known for their distinctive clumps or trumpet-shaped flowers that come in a variety of colours that will bring light and colour to your space.
Where to plant Agapanthus
The Agapanthus plant thrives in fertile, well-drained soil that receives full sun throughout the day.
How to look after Agapanthus plants
Water regularly during the growing season to keep the soil moist but not wet. This is especially important during the first year of owning your plant to help it establish itself. Feed your Agapanthus with a liquid fertilizer once a month during the spring and summer. Increase the frequency to fortnightly for container-grown plants and stop feeding once the plant begins to flower.
Deadhead when flowers have faded, cutting them off at the base to encourage a more extended flowering season. The Agapanthus is particularly prone to frost. You can get around this by placing a few layers of gardening fleece around the base of the plant from early November to April. You could also add a 15-25 inch layer of mulch around the ground in autumn or early winter, but make sure to remove it before spring when growth starts.
