£14.49

Also known as the ‘Peruvian lily’, the Alstroemeria is a hardy perennial native to South America that is known for its vividly coloured trumpet-like flowers. The flowers grow in clusters on top of the thick stems and are attractively patterned and marked on the inside which creates an exotic lily like appearance. This popular border plant will flower from midsummer to mid-autumn in a range of colours from orange to red, purple and yellow, al colours that will attract pollinators into your garden.

Where to grow Alstroemerias

The Alstroemeria plant should be placed in a well-draining soil that receives full sun throughout the day. Choose a spot that is sheltered from cold, strong winds. This plant will look fantastic in a sunny border amongst other perennials and create a really striking display when paired with roses. The Alstroemeria can also be grown in pots and containers if they are well-draining and filled with a peat-free soil -based potting compost.

How to grow Alstroemerias

Alstroemeria roots are prone to rotting if overwatered, so keep the soil moist, but not wet. During dry spells watch the plant carefully as it may need to be watered more often. Feed in the summer with a high potash fertilizer such as a tomato fertilizer. Taller varieties will benefit from staking to support the stems when they flower and become top heavy. Once the flowers have faded, remove the whole stem by pulling it from the base of the flower to stimulate new growth.
