Begonia Illumination Orange Bedding plant
This product is unavailable
A traditional favourite, the begonia is a plant that looks just as good at the front of beds and borders as it does in a container or hanging basket. The vibrant colours last throughout the summer with the fullness of the ruffled petals bringing a softness to the garden that is well contrasted by the more sharp-looking deep green foliage. The pillowy petals of this begonia are orange and will grow into small mounds of colour that will delight wherever they are grown. A begonia can grow up to five feet high and will produce flowers throughout the summer until the first frost.
Plant your begonia in well-draining soil in a partially shaded space that is protected from strong, cold winds. If planting in a container, make sure not to choose a pot that is too big as the begonia likes being more root-bound than other plants. Only repot when absolutely necessary.
Water your begonias thoroughly and deeply once every fortnight. To avoid root rot, let the soil dry out before rewatering. A soaker hose is a great way to water your begonias if you have one. Plants in a container need more regular watering, and if the pot is well-draining, you can allow less time between watering.
Fertilize your begonia every two to three weeks in the summer with half-strength liquid fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing in the winter.
Begonias don't require pruning, but regular deadheading can help prevent disease and increase flowering. Pinch off the entire flower stalk after the flowers fade and remove dry leaves from the plants.
