This product is unavailable
The humble sprout is a traditional part of the British Christmas dinner. This wonderful and nutritious winter vegetable is a love it or hate it food, but to those that like them there is nothing better than home grown ones. Often just boiled, these vegetables take on a stronger and slightly sweeter taste when roasted or fried with bacon. Leftover sprouts are also a wonderful edition to a bubble and squeak.
How to grow brussels sprouts at home
Plant your sprouts in a sunny location that is sheltered from strong, cold winds. The soil should be well-draining and have a lot of room since brussels sprouts like to develop a deep and wide root system. You may need to stake your sprouts as they grow. Water your plants well and apply fertilizer once every two weeks in the summer.
How do you harvest brussels sprouts?
Brussels sprouts are ready to harvest between July and November. Your plants are ready to harvest once the sprouts have developed outer leaves. For the best results, harvest after a frost to get the best tasting vegetables. To harvest your sprouts, cut the stalk of the plant off of the roots and remove the individual sprouts with a sharp knife.
What are plug plants?
Plug plants are very young plants that come ready to go in the ground. They are grown in single units in modular trays and be either seedlings or cuttings. Buying plug plants lets you fill your beds and borders easily, and in a way that is stress-free for your plant since it allows for little root disturbance.
How do you plant a plug plant?
When you first get your plant home, remove any packaging except for the pot. Place the plant in a warm and sunny space for 2-4 hours to let them recover and acclimatise. You should try to plant your plug the same day if you can. To do this, dig a hole in your desired place that is slightly larger than the root ball and soil around it and put the plug inside. Cover with the existing earth and press down lightly. Water well for the first week to help the plant establish itself and feed with an all-purpose feed after 3 weeks.
