This product is unavailable
The fennel sits in a strange place in the kitchen, it can be grown as either a vegetable of a herb, but however you choose to eat it, the delicate aniseed flavour of this bulb will enrich any dish it is added to. Ideal if paired with fish or eggs, the fennel is a great vegetable to have as a side dish. If you want to add a meatier and sweeter taste to the vegetable try roasting it, or if you want a healthier option, cook lightly in truffle oil and serve with bread and olives.
How to grow fennel at home
Plant your fennel in a sunny location that has a well-draining soil. Water well in the first two weeks to help the plant establish itself in the garden then reduce to watering only when the top layer of soil has dried. Weed around your plant to keep the area clear. As the plant grows it will develop a series of green shoots that grow from a central white stalk.
How do you harvest fennel?
You can harvest your fennel between July and September. You will know that your plant is ready to harvest when the bulbs are around 7cm across. To harvest just pull the bulb from the ground as needed.
What are plug plants?
Plug plants are very young plants that come ready to go in the ground. They are grown in single units in modular trays and be either seedlings or cuttings. Buying plug plants lets you fill your beds and borders easily, and in a way that is stress-free for your plant since it allows for little root disturbance.
How do you plant a plug plant?
When you first get your plant home, remove any packaging except for the pot. Place the plant in a warm and sunny space for 2-4 hours to let them recover and acclimatise. You should try to plant your plug the same day if you can. To do this, dig a hole in your desired place that is slightly larger than the root ball and soil around it and put the plug inside. Cover with the existing earth and press down lightly. Water well for the first week to help the plant establish itself and feed with an all-purpose feed after 3 weeks.
