How to grow cannellini beans at home
Plant your beans in a well-draining soil that receives full sun throughout the day. Before planting you should treat the soil with a well-rotted manure or homemade compost. Plant your beans in rows about 6 inches apart. Once planted, water well to help the plants establish a strong root system. Line your row with inward sloping bamboo in an A-frame shape. Line this frame with string to help support your plant as it grows. Weed and water your plants regularly and feed with fertilizer once a month.
How do you harvest cannellini beans?
You can harvest your beans between July and September. The bean pods are ready to harvest once the pods become dry, shrivelled and brittle. You should avoid picking after rain to keep the beans as dry as possible. To harvest, simply twist the pod off the stem.
How do you store cannellini beans?
If you eat the beans regularly then you should pick only as you need them, but if you want to preserve them for year-round use the most effective method is drying; remove the beans from the pod and lay them on a tray in a warm place to fully dry out. Once dry, store the beans in an airtight jar to use in casseroles or soups.
What are plug plants?
Plug plants are very young plants that come ready to go in the ground. They are grown in single units in modular trays and be either seedlings or cuttings. Buying plug plants lets you fill your beds and borders easily, and in a way that is stress-free for your plant since it allows for little root disturbance.
How do you plant a plug plant?
When you first get your plant home, remove any packaging except for the pot. Place the plant in a warm and sunny space for 2-4 hours to let them recover and acclimatise. You should try to plant your plug the same day if you can. To do this, dig a hole in your desired place that is slightly larger than the root ball and soil around it and put the plug inside. Cover with the existing earth and press down lightly. Water well for the first week to help the plant establish itself and feed with an all-purpose feed after 3 weeks.
