Celeriac Giant Prague Organic 10 x 3cm Vegetable Plug Plants
This product is unavailable
The celeriac is an underappreciated vegetable in the UK. It’s knobbly and uneven shape may be off putting to some, but once peeled the dense flesh has a subtle, celery-like flavour with a strong nutty overtone. Mostly cooked mashed but makes a fantastically warming soup. Interestingly, this vegetable goes well if baked with parmesan crumbs.
How to grow celeriac at home
Celeriac loves a lot of moisture, so it is best to plant your celeriac in a damp, but well-draining soil that receives sun throughout the day. You should prepare the soil beforehand with a thick layer of mulch to help it retain more moisture. As the plants mature, they will develop tall, outward branching foliage that had a jagged appearance. As the plants mature, remove the outer leaves when they begin to droop, this will expose the crown of the plant. Allow this to develop and remove any side shoots until ready to harvest.
How do you harvest celeriac?
Your celeriac will be ready to harvest between October and March. Your celeriac is ready to harvest when the skin above the soil has become hard. To harvest the plant, gently remove from the soil by grabbing the place where the foliage meets the vegetable and pulling.
What are plug plants?
Plug plants are very young plants that come ready to go in the ground. They are grown in single units in modular trays and be either seedlings or cuttings. Buying plug plants lets you fill your beds and borders easily, and in a way that is stress-free for your plant since it allows for little root disturbance.
How do you plant a plug plant?
When you first get your plant home, remove any packaging except for the pot. Place the plant in a warm and sunny space for 2-4 hours to let them recover and acclimatise. You should try to plant your plug the same day if you can. To do this, dig a hole in your desired place that is slightly larger than the root ball and soil around it and put the plug inside. Cover with the existing earth and press down lightly. Water well for the first week to help the plant establish itself and feed with an all-purpose feed after 3 weeks.
