Celery is a fundamental dish in so much cooking, when combined with onion and carrot it is the base to pretty much all soups and stews. This wonderfully crisp vegetable has a mildly spicy flavour that tastes great on it’s own or as part of a salad or dipping platter.
How to grow celery at home
Plant your celery in a moisture retentive soil that receives a lot of sun throughout the day. We would recommend adding some vermiculite to the soil before planting to help it retain more water. In the wild, celery grows in boggy ground so water your plant regularly to ensure that it doesn’t dry out. If you are growing your celery in pots, fertilize every fortnight with a balanced fertilizer during the summer. As it grows the individual stems will become more distinct as they grow largr and will eventually flower.
How do you harvest celery?
Your celery will be able to harvest between July and November. You should harvest once the celery stalks have reached the desired size, but before the first frosts hit. To harvest, cut the base of the plant or stalk you want with a sharp knife.
What are plug plants?
Plug plants are very young plants that come ready to go in the ground. They are grown in single units in modular trays and be either seedlings or cuttings. Buying plug plants lets you fill your beds and borders easily, and in a way that is stress-free for your plant since it allows for little root disturbance.
How do you plant a plug plant?
When you first get your plant home, remove any packaging except for the pot. Place the plant in a warm and sunny space for 2-4 hours to let them recover and acclimatise. You should try to plant your plug the same day if you can. To do this, dig a hole in your desired place that is slightly larger than the root ball and soil around it and put the plug inside. Cover with the existing earth and press down lightly. Water well for the first week to help the plant establish itself and feed with an all-purpose feed after 3 weeks.
