Carrots are an easy to grow vegetable that brings sweet flavour and bright colour to the dinner table. This popular vegetable is full of nutrients and tastes just as good in a smoothie as it does in a soup. Unlike the carrots you will find in the supermarket you may get some odd shapes, but you can be guaranteed that they will taste better than anything you can buy. How to grow carrots at home
Plant your carrots in a well-draining soil that receives sun throughout the day. Water your plants well when they are first planted to help them establish themselves then reduce watering until you only maintaining a moist soil. At this point you only need to water your plants and make sure the space around is well weeded. Over time the leaves above ground will grow talled and become more green until they are ready to harvest.
How do you harvest carrots?
Your carrots will be ready to harvest between June and November. Your carrots will be ready to harvest once they large enough for you to use. You can check this by gently lifting a carrot from the ground. Don’t do this too often as you can attract carrot root flies. For the best flavour, harvest the carrots with the shortest roots first. To harvest the carrot, grab the plant at the bottom of the leaves and use right away.
What are plug plants?
Plug plants are very young plants that come ready to go in the ground. They are grown in single units in modular trays and be either seedlings or cuttings. Buying plug plants lets you fill your beds and borders easily, and in a way that is stress-free for your plant since it allows for little root disturbance.
How do you plant a plug plant?
When you first get your plant home, remove any packaging except for the pot. Place the plant in a warm and sunny space for 2-4 hours to let them recover and acclimatise. You should try to plant your plug the same day if you can. To do this, dig a hole in your desired place that is slightly larger than the root ball and soil around it and put the plug inside. Cover with the existing earth and press down lightly. Water well for the first week to help the plant establish itself and feed with an all-purpose feed after 3 weeks.
