Perlite is a lightweight soil conditioner that is made out of fine volcanic glass. This porous material is great at absorbing water whilst improving drainage, which allows your soil to freely drain whilst still providing moisture to your plant. This material is especially useful in plant propagation where it can be used for germinating new seeds and growing cuttings. Perlite is also naturally sterile, which will help to decrease the chances of harmful bacterial or fungal growth. It’s a lightweight and easy to handle material that is PH neutral – the ideal addition to any soil mix. Fine perlite will provide slower drainage than coarse perlite, making it ideal for plants that prefer a wetter, but still well-draining soil.
