The Pak choi is a member of the cabbage family and is a key ingredient in most eastern cookery. It is great when stuffed and steamed or served as a side with ramen or other dishes. It has a flavour that tastes like a mix between mild cabbage and spinach with a crisp, crunchy texture.

How to grow pak choi at home

Plant your Pak choi in a sunny location that has a well-draining soil. Water well when first introducing the plant to the garden. Keep watering the plant to keep the soil moist. Avoid watering the leaves directly to avoid the leaves burning. Weed the area directly around the plant to discourage competition and help the plant grow.

How do you harvest pak choi?

Pak choi can be harvested from late spring to late summer, if repeated sowings are made. Baby leaves are ready to harvest in as little as 30 days, while semi-mature to full-sized heads take 45–75 days. To harvest your pak choi, pull it carefully out of the ground as you need it. Once the Pak choi has flowered it will become woody and tasteless.

What are plug plants?

Plug plants are very young plants that come ready to go in the ground. They are grown in single units in modular trays and be either seedlings or cuttings. Buying plug plants lets you fill your beds and borders easily, and in a way that is stress-free for your plant since it allows for little root disturbance.

How do you plant a plug plant?

When you first get your plant home, remove any packaging except for the pot. Place the plant in a warm and sunny space for 2-4 hours to let them recover and acclimatise. You should try to plant your plug the same day if you can. To do this, dig a hole in your desired place that is slightly larger than the root ball and soil around it and put the plug inside. Cover with the existing earth and press down lightly. Water well for the first week to help the plant establish itself and feed with an all-purpose feed after 3 weeks.
