flowering plant | toxic to pets

Poinsettias need no introduction. They are a beautiful seasonal sight. In fact, they're probably one of the best things about this time of year.

Poinsettias originate from the hot climes of Southern Mexico, which means that in the UK, they are best suited to indoor living. They need lots of bright, indirect light in order to maintain and enhance their brightly coloured bracts (those are the bits that look like flower petals).

People tend to treat poinsettias as annuals, but with a little care and attention, they will come back year after year:

  • During the autumn and winter months, keep the soil moist, but not wet. The trick is to keep it just a little bit more watered than 'dry'.
  • Then, in spring, you can allow the plant to dry out a little more between waterings. At that point in time, these plants can become 'leggy' and drop their leaves. This is often a sign that the plant needs repotting.
  • If you persevere and repot the plant at this point, then fertilise it throughout the summer, you should be rewarded with another set of beautiful, bright bracts (how's that for alliteration) next autumn.

Poinsettias are highly toxic to dogs and cats so please keep this plant out of reach of your furry friends.
