A tuberous perennial that provides late winter to early spring colour, the Scilla is the ideal plant to keep colour in your outdoor space at the beginning of the year. This hardy plant thrives perfectly well under trees or at the front of a shaded border. This low-growing plant produces small tufts of large, glossy heart shaped leaves that sit under coloured stems topped with pendulum-like flowers that come in a variety of bright colours. These flowers are especially effective if planted alongside early flowering species like snowdrops or primroses.
Where to grow Scilla plants
Plant in partly shaded space in a well-draining humus-rich soil.
How to grow Scilla plants
Scilla are sensitive to both over and under watering. Water your Scilla plant only when the soil is dry to the touch, and only so much that the soil becomes moist, and not wet. water from below the leaves so that the water doesn’t touch the stems or leaves which can cause them to rot. Only fertilize once every one to two months with water soluble fertilizer mixed at half strength. If you over fertilize you will find that your plant will not bloom the following year. Remove wilted or yellowing flowers regularly by removing the entire stem, this will encourage new growth throughout the flowering season.
