Purple sprouting broccoli is one of the most popular vegetables in the UK. It is high in vitamins and cancer fighting minerals. This easy-to-grow vegetable needs a lot of room to grow, but you will find that you have a vegetable that is much better than anything you can buy from the supermarket. In the kitchen, the broccoli is a great as a side on a roast dinner or if roasted will take on a slightly bitter taste that works very well in a salad.

How to grow broccoli at home

Plant your broccoli in a well-draining soil in full-sun or light shade. When first planted, water well to help your plant establish itself in the space. The plants will slowly grow taller and may need staking for support. When the plant is around 8 inches tall, add a high-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage further and more healthy growth. As the plant grows you may need to add a net over your plant as birds will find the young plants very attractive. The broccoli heads will slowly form at the tips of the stems.

How do you harvest broccoli?

Your broccoli will be ready to harvest between July and October. Your broccoli will be ready to harvest once the heads are closely growing and turn a darker colour. If the head begins to turn yellow, you should harvest immediately. To harvest, remove the head from the stem with a sharp knife. Once removed side shoots will continue to grow and can be harvested as tender stem broccoli.

What are plug plants?

Plug plants are very young plants that come ready to go in the ground. They are grown in single units in modular trays and be either seedlings or cuttings. Buying plug plants lets you fill your beds and borders easily, and in a way that is stress-free for your plant since it allows for little root disturbance.

How do you plant a plug plant?

When you first get your plant home, remove any packaging except for the pot. Place the plant in a warm and sunny space for 2-4 hours to let them recover and acclimatise. You should try to plant your plug the same day if you can. To do this, dig a hole in your desired place that is slightly larger than the root ball and soil around it and put the plug inside. Cover with the existing earth and press down lightly. Water well for the first week to help the plant establish itself and feed with an all-purpose feed after 3 weeks.
