Sweetbell Organic Turnip 10 x 3cm Vegetable Plug Plants
This product is unavailable
Of all the root vegetables that grow naturally in the Uk, the turnip is one that is sometimes underappreciated. Mildly spicy when raw, they become sweeter and more earthy when cooked. If you roast or fry a turnup in a way that caramelises it, you will find it also takes on a nutty flavour. This hearty little vegetable is traditionally used in stews or mashed, but they can be used raw in salads, steamed for a sweeter mash or pickled for use in sandwiches of cold buffets.
How to grow turnips at home
Turnips are an easy to grow vegetable that can be pretty much left alone once established in a suitable location. You should plant your turnips in a garden bed or container with a well-draining soil that receives full sun throughout the day. You can grow them in a shaded location, but they won’t have as sweet a taste. Water the plants regularly to keep the soil moist. If you allow the soil to become dry you will find that the roots don’t properly develop, and you will have much smaller vegetables.
How do you harvest turnips?
Your turnips will be ready to harvest when the top has become a blush, purple colour and is about the size of a tennis ball. To harvest, remove the required vegetables from the ground gently with a fork.
What are plug plants?
Plug plants are very young plants that come ready to go in the ground. They are grown in single units in modular trays and be either seedlings or cuttings. Buying plug plants lets you fill your beds and borders easily, and in a way that is stress-free for your plant since it allows for little root disturbance.
How do you plant a plug plant?
When you first get your plant home, remove any packaging except for the pot. Place the plant in a warm and sunny space for 2-4 hours to let them recover and acclimatise. You should try to plant your plug the same day if you can. To do this, dig a hole in your desired place that is slightly larger than the root ball and soil around it and put the plug inside. Cover with the existing earth and press down lightly. Water well for the first week to help the plant establish itself and feed with an all-purpose feed after 3 weeks.
